KIDS launches free suite of resources to support families with disabled children who will use personal budgets.

 

KIDS has launched a new suite of resources to support families and carers of disabled children who will be using the new personal budgets.
 
KIDS is a national charity that works with disabled children, young people and their families.
 
As part of the ‘Making it Personal’ project, sponsored by the Department for Education, KIDS has worked with a number of partners to develop a new suite of resources to explore how personal budgets can be used to their best advantage.
 
As part of the ‘Making it Personal’ project, sponsored by the Department for Education, KIDS has worked with a number of partners (OPM, Disability Rights UK, In Control, NAFIS and the Daycare Trust) to develop a new suite of resources to explore how personal budgets can be used to their best advantage.
 
These resources consist of:
  • A handbook for parents and carers of disabled children and young people.
  • Interactive eLearning for parents and carers, drawing on the handbook.
  • Guidance for commissioners and others in children’s services on how to commission for personalisation.

This work was developed in response to the Department for Education’s Green Paper Support and Aspiration: A new approach to special educational needs and disability (DfE 2011)
 
"To give parents confidence by giving them more control over the support their family receives, we will introduce more transparency in the provision of services for children and young people who are disabled or who have SEN. Parents will have real choice over their child's education and the opportunity for direct control over support for their family. We propose the option of a personal budget by 2014 for all families with children with a statement of SEN or a new 'Education, Health and Care Plan', many of whom will have complex support needs. Key workers will be trained to advise families and help them navigate the range of help available across health, education and social care."
 
KIDS works across all of England. The charity has also pioneered a range of approaches for working with disabled children including Portage (home learning), Direct Short Breaks and England’s first inclusive adventure playground.

Newman is a community special school which offers a specialist range of provision to support children and young people with physical disabilities, medical needs and complex learning needs. The majority of our children and young people have a range of issues and combination of layered needs including autism and speech and language/ communication needs; learning; physical; medical; social emotional, and mental health as well as sensory needs.

Newman School

Support: All children have Education and Health Care Plans or Statements detailing their individual priorities – communication, academic, social/ emotional. Children with complex medical needs have individual Care Plans, e.g., for epilepsy and asthma. Children with additional social, emotional and mental health needs have Behaviour Plans, including details of how to remove/ reduce challenges and respond safely if they are in a crisis. All children have Pupil Profiles detailing the child’s view of their strengths, areas needing support, likes and dislikes, academic levels, barriers to learning, means of support to access the curriculum. At Newman School we have very high adult to pupil staffing ratios. We have an Inclusion Officer and two Family Support Workers working with our families and young people. The local Health Authority provides Physiotherapy provision on site four days a week and Occupational Therapy provision on site weekly. Our Sensory Rooms give pupils opportunities to experience and control the environment through light, touch and sound; and to have time and space to be calm/emotionally regulate. A music therapist provides weekly sessions for a range of pupils.

  • We aim to create an environment that is warm, free from inhibiting pressures yet has the capability to be challenging, thus providing the best conditions for learning and development: our Key Stage 4 pupils can take take a range of external qualifications at appropriate levels- e.g., GCSE, Entry levels, Functional skills.

Social, Emotional, Mental Health: Our Newman Additional Resource and the Our Space Nurture Provision in Newman Main School support young people with mental well-being and health needs including anxiety and complex social and emotional needs. All pupils belong to a House, collecting House Points for effort, good work and positive social interaction, and we celebrate weekly which House has gained the most. School Council plan and run daily games in the Sports Yard – cricket, hockey, football, rounders and basketball. Bikes are available, supervised by staff. We run Lunch Clubs, for example Choir, Craft, Music. Through the year we offer After School Clubs: e.g. sports, cooking, Post 16 Youth Club and music.

Community Links: Newman School enjoys wide ranging sporting links, promoting access for all. Visiting Music and Drama Workshops take place through the year, followed by high involvement in and commitment to the Children’s Festival, e.g., Book Awards, ROSCARs Film Awards, Picture This and the One Voice Choir.

New Head Teacher - By Millie

Mr Silvester worked at North Ridge School, Doncaster before Newman School. He enjoyed school as a child but he went to an all boys school and would have liked it to be a mixed school. His favourite subject at school was History. When asked his first impression of Newman School he said “fantastic”. He wants more trips, more things for the website and to make reception look better. Mr Silvester didn’t think he would be a head teacher when he was a child. He has only wanted to be a head teacher for the last few years.
