About Us
Newman School caters for young people with SEND from ages 2 to 19 in the Rotherham area. We work with lots of other fantastic local providers to make sure each of our pupils achieve their potential.
Every child deserves the best possible start in life and support to fulfil their potential.
A child’s experience in the early years has a major impact on their future life, providing the foundation for children to make the most of their abilities as they grow up. Here at Newman our foundation stage team strive to provide children with those experiences and activities to help them thrive. We provide activities which help children to explore their environment and the objects and people within it. We want them to learn about themselves and their environment through direct experience. We also place a great deal of emphasis upon the development of self-help skills which include: toileting, feeding, drinking, dressing and undressing. The foundation stage team work closely with other agencies, including speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and music therapists, to ensure a broad and balanced curriculum that focuses on each individual child’s needs and priorities. We learn through play and sensory experiences every day, and have lots of fun with our friends and teachers! The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) document supports us in this. Briefly:
The EYFS is a stage of children’s development from birth to the end of their first year (Reception) year in school. The EYFS Framework describes how early years practitioners should work with children and their families to support their development and learning. It is made up of 7 Areas of Learning. These are: Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Communication and Language, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. The framework describes how your child should be kept safe and cared for and how all concerned can make sure that your child achieves the most that they can in their earliest years of life.
