Phonics and Reading Schemes

At Newman, we introduce Jolly Phonics in EYFS and continue using these throughout the Key Stages where appropriate. All students in EYFS and Key Stage 1 and 2 get a daily input of Jolly Phonics, where the phonic sound is taught alongside the song and movement for that sound. This multi-sensory approach compliments the specific needs our students have.

In Primary, we use Oxford Reading Tree and PM Readers as our primary reading schemes.  Students read banded books which allow them to progress at their own pace. We also offer the Oxford Reading Tree e-books to read at home, and each student has a log on.

In Secondary and Sixth Form, students mainly read Dockside books by Rising Stars as although they are still levelled books, the stories and images are more age-appropriate for our older learners.
