    • Our Local Park

      Published 02/12/25

This term, the children at Model Village have been exploring their Geography unit, Our Local Park. As part of their learning, the class carried out a local study of the nearby park to identify its key features and think about ways it could be improved for everyone in the community.

During their visit, the children worked hard to spot and describe both the human and physical features of the park. They also completed observational drawings, shared their ideas about what they liked best, and discussed thoughtful suggestions for how the park could be made even better.

The pupils represented Model Village brilliantly, they were sensible, polite, and showed great awareness while walking safely across busy roads. It was a day full of learning, teamwork, and fun. Of course, there was time for a well-earned play on the park too!

    • Remembrance Day

      Published 11/11/25

This week, we came together to mark Remembrance Day through a powerful creative project: the Remembrance Poppy Art Project 2025.

Each class, from the youngest pupils to Year 6, used their observational skills to draw poppies, reflecting on their symbolism of remembrance, resilience and hope. These beautiful pieces were then combined into one large collaborative artwork, a vase filled with poppies which represents unity, gratitude and peace.

The project sought to capture the contrast between the devastation of war and the delicate, enduring beauty of the poppy, reminding us of all the sacrifices made by those who have served and continue to serve.

We’re proud that this artwork will be displayed as part of the community Remembrance Service at Shirebrook Leisure Centre, in partnership with the Town Council.

    • 🌾 Harvest Festival Joy🌾

      Published 07/11/25

Model Village Primary School recently held their very own Harvest Festival, and it was a truly wonderful celebration!

The children brought their very best singing voices to mark the occasion. The hall was filled with cheerful harvest songs, and some classes even treated everyone to a touch of polyphony (singing different lines at the same time!) 🎶

The school community showed incredible generosity once again. The many donations received have been shared with BLAST in Shirebrook, who are using them to support their community fridge initiative.

Even better, BLAST has now applied for funding to bring a community fridge right to the school gates! Hopefully, this will be successful and will complement Model Village Primary’s ongoing partnerships with Aldi and Lidl in supporting the local community.

A huge well done and thank you to everyone at Model Village Primary School for making the Harvest Festival such a joyful celebration of community spirit.

The Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) programme is dedicated to enhancing the quality of playtime in schools, acknowledging that play is vital for children's growth. Its goal is to foster environments where children can participate in creative, collaborative, and active play, which is essential for their learning and social development.

On Tuesday, October 14th, Model Village hosted more than 100 parents for an OPAL Play morning. Parents savoured a delicious sausage sandwich, attended a talk explaining the concept of OPAL Play, and then joined their children to partake in the enjoyable activities. Activities include a waterslide, a sandbox, scooters, water play and building blocks. The children (and adults) had a lovely morning.

The event was not only a delightful experience for all attendees but also an eye-opener for many parents who witnessed firsthand the benefits of structured yet flexible playtime.

    • Year 2 Visit to Shirebrook Fire Station

      Published 06/10/25

On Thursday 25th September, the Year 2 pupils from Model Village Primary School enjoyed an exciting visit to Shirebrook Fire Station. During their visit, the children learned about the vital role the fire service plays in helping the public and explored the modern equipment used by firefighters today.

The trip linked perfectly to their History topic, The Great Fire of London, giving the children the opportunity to compare how fires are dealt with now to how they were managed in 1666. The pupils were also thrilled to see a real fire engine up close and discover the different tools it carries — excellent inspiration for their upcoming Design and Technology project, where they will be designing and making their own moving fire engines.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable and educational afternoon for everyone involved. Model Village Primary School would like to thank Mrs Johnson and Mr Edwardson for supporting the children during the visit, and Miss Kerry for leading such a fantastic learning experience.
