    • Learning Afloat: Newman Students Explore Life on the Ethel Barge 🛥️

      Published 17/06/25

Pupils from Newman School swapped classrooms for the calm of the water as they set off on an exciting educational trip aboard the Ethel Barge.

The group spent the day learning about the environment, teamwork, and river life, all while navigating South Yorkshire’s inland waterways.

The Ethel Barge, a historic vessel, provided a unique setting for hands-on learning and personal development. For many, it was their first time on the water — and an experience they won’t soon forget.

Teachers praised the trip as a valuable opportunity to boost confidence, encourage collaboration, and deepen pupils’ understanding of the local environment.

The visit to the Ethel Barge is part of Newman’s commitment to providing enriched learning opportunities beyond the classroom. The pupils embraced the adventure wholeheartedly.
